A Baby 'Nurse' who provides non-medical care for a newborn privately for a family is not necessarily a licensed or registered nurse. So why do they use the term Nurse? Well, back in the day the term 'Nurse' was used to mean caregiving. Therefore if you cared for a baby, you were considered a baby 'nurse'. Even to this day, if you look up the word Nurse in the dictionary, you'll find one of its meanings to be caretaking.

A couple years ago, however, the International Nanny Association pooled professionals together and came up with the name 'Newborn Care Specialist' to take the place of the term 'Baby Nurse' since the term 'Nurse' was misleading and was only appropriate for medical professionals who went to school for Nursing License.

So what does a Newborn Care Specialist do? They provide superior newborn care for families in their home after they arrive home from the hospital; this could include night care to allow new parents rest, day care to get the baby on a good routine, or 24 hour care which is full service, there-when-you-need-them care. A Newborn Care Specialist will diaper, feed, bath, and get the baby off to a good sleeping and eating schedule. Unlike a postpartum doula, a Newborn Care Specialist is providing care exclusively to baby and relieving and supporting parents as needed.

A Postpartum Doula is focused on well mother care and assisting mom in recovery after birth and helping her care for baby by doing light chores, errands, newborn support, and light housekeeping.

Training and Certification is available for both Postpartum Doulas and Newborn Care Specialists (formerly known as baby nurses). Experience combined with professional training will lead to the beginning of a career in the newborn/postpartum care world!
